spoonsThe Prowler seems to have a lot of False Perceptions. Which ones have you heard?

The most common false perception I've heard is that people think the Prowlers cost more than it really is. Most people think the Prowler cost $60k-$100k.

The other false perception is the Prowler has no convertible top. People seemed to be amazed when I show them that the car has a fully functional top. I guess they must think it's like a cobra.

No one to blame here but the dealers. When it first came out, I saw them as high as $140K. No dealer was selling anywhere close to sticker. As recently as late 1999, I saw a black one with a sticker of $100K on it.

Even now, some of the few remaining new ones have tags on them for $55-65K.

Most of the public that wanted to see one up close, went the first 1-2 years, saw the huge price, told all their friends, etc.

The dealers fueled that myth.

Randy CobbIs it a kit car?

Steve TI have 2 that I hear fairly often:

1. "Is that a Viper?"

2. "It's nice but it only has a six cylinder, must be slow."

Bob MillerI've been asked if it's a kit car; or did I build it myself.
People I've spoken with also assume they cost $70K-$80K new.
My young male co-workers claim I bought it so I could go cruise the local high schools for girls. Not true of course, but they see it only as a babe-mobile. Obviously they just don't get it...

Here's one contributor to that impression:

Caught it on ReplayTV last night, "I Was a Teenage Faust". "An agent from hell wants a nerd to sell his soul". It's from 2001, stars Robert Townsend, Morgan Fairchild, Stuart Margolin, Josh Zuckerman, Noel Fisher. Red Prowler gets quite a bit of play and is referred to as

"A $65,000 SPORTS CAR".

Gotta see it (but it WAS bad).

Hey that ain't funny. Some of us did pay close to that much or more a few years back. When the prices got lower we had to buy a second one to "dollar cost average." LOL

mojoriserIt's good to get 'in' with a dealer. Got my '97 for sticker in '97.
ed monahanSaturday afternoon a guy asked me how the Prowler compared to the PT. I was dumbfounded. I can't figure out if he doesn't know what a PT looks like or if he meant a Viper! I didn't know what to say to him.
Bob MillerEd, you should have told him that as far as panel trucks go, the Prowler sucks, but it does do pretty well as a sports car.

Yesterday someone remarked that my Prowler looked like a Bentley because of the shape of rear end? I better look up the Bentley and see what they look like!

CatDudeOne kid asked where I worked... I told him the company (which employs several hundred locally)... He asked if I owned the business... lol...

Obviously, he thought the car was worth a lot more than it was...

Bob MillerHey Ed, maybe that guy saw this Kat on E-bay and got the two mixed up.

DaliIn my humble opinion, I think we should all let people think they ALL cost 100k. When people talk about how little they "SAW" one for sale, that drives all our values down.

If someone asks me if my "Pretty Kitty" costs $100K, my answer is gonna be "YES". They will tell all their friends they saw one that day, talked to the owner, and the price tag. Sooner or later, one of those people will want to buy one, and by then the word of mouth will have driven our prices UP !!!

And for those of you who did pay 80-100k, please dont feel bad. After all, you are driving the most awesome car on the road, arn't you? And I for one would have paid 100k for mine if thats what it had costed. I dont think you got ripped off, I just got a slightly better deal.

obi-wanI like the one where I overheard A guy at an Indian gambling place say he had herd they would only go about 60mph. I saddled up to him and gave him A proper introduction, complete with the under the hood look and took all of his friends along for the almost unabridged story with all the circles and arrows with colored glossy pictures on the back. Boy was he sorry he said anything-but he was impressed and when he and his following went away they were for more informed that they had A wright to be-so there. Obi-Wan.

This must be one of the very early Plymouth's,right?
Are they Japanese(that kills me)!

Bob MillerA guy stopped me last Sunday and ask me how long it took to build my car. I said I bought it that way. He said did the guy make any others and I said yes, about 11,000. He said What!?!
CJWhen I worked for the Sports Marketing company and did the Plymouth Prowler roadshow for Chrysler, I was able to actually work the display on a number of occasions. This was even before it went into production. I handed out literature and answered questions and it was interesting to just stand back and listen to people's comments.

1. In actuality, (even before the dealer's got their hands on the vehicles) people automatically assumed it was more money than what msrp was. They thought because it was a very cool "sports car", it was going to be very expensive. When I told them what the MSRP actually was, they were always surprised, but pleased that they might even be able to afford one.....which was what Bob Lutz wanted.

2. The guys were disappointed that there was no V8 planned for the car and didn't think the V6 was sufficient. I also had to explain that the car was not built for speed and racing.......but to be a nostalgic cruisier.

3. People couldn't grasp the rear transaxle concept! First thing the guys did was look under the car in the rear!

4. Couldn't believe it was actually a Plymouth!!

spoonsCJ,

Thanks for the Pics! I loved them.

I also get the question..... "That's a Plymouth?"

firegabeAny notice that the trunk is closed in all those pics!!!
